Vitamin B12 hailed on front page of New York Times

Jane Brody, that quintessential health reporter at the New York Times, says she tends to dismiss taking a daily multivitamin, which is the best health insurance she can buy.  She says she has been influenced by experts who claim overuse of dietary supplements only results in Americans having the most expensive urine in the world.

Now 75 years of age, Brody asks if she is absorbing all the nutrients from her food, in particular vitamin B12.  She cites estimates that 10-30% of people over age 50 produce an insufficient amount of stomach acid which impairs B12 absorption.  [New York Times Sept 6, 2016]
