Soda pop taxes loom

High fructose corn syrup sweetened soda pop has spawned the worldwide diabesity epidemic.  Taxes on soda pop consumption loom to curb consumption.  Will these proposed taxes make any difference to soda pop addicts?  Well, one study shows a 21% reduction in consumption of sugary drinks when a tax was applied.  But will that be meaningful?  Mexico passed a law taxing sugary beverages and consumption fell by only 17%.  [New York Times Aug 25, 2016]  A tax on sugary beverages would do one thing – usher in more natural non-caloric sweeteners.  Expect a major bottler of soda pop to soon announce it will totally convert to a natural non-caloric sweetener soon.
