NEWBORNS IN FINLAND SLEEP IN GOVERNMENT-ISSUED CARDBOARD CRIBS

A number of years ago I wrote a book entitled WHY BABIES DIE
(out of print) that revealed the work of forensic scientist Jim Sprott who advocated newborns sleep on their backs, never sleep on used mattresses and use non-toxic mattress covers. His advice saved many babies lives. His theory was that fluids like urine in the crib mixed with chemical flame retardants created undetectable toxic gases that snuffed out the lives of newborns. There has never been a reported cot death among babies who slept on wrapped mattresses.

A recent news report reveals Finland provides a safe place for infants, outside of their parents’ bed, to sleep. Babies sleep in a cardboard box with a clean replaceable mat. You can visualize the box at The New York Times.
