More Forgotten Remedies: How To Quell Acid Reflux (Heartburn) Without Antacids

Well, a half-teaspoon of baking soda, being alkaline, will often calm heartburn (really an irritated esophagus).  However, there is a report of supplemental zinc working even better than Prilosec and other heartburn remedies.  It worked within seconds, says the report. [Yale Medicine]  So-called proton-pump inhibitors, those designer antacids, aren’t as effective as advertised.  Symptoms of heartburn return 60% of the time. “Zinc salt could lead to a rapid and sustained increase in gastric pH in both animals and in humans and provide a new rapid acid suppression therapy,” say researchers.  [American Journal Gastroenterology Jan 2011]
