Elderberry for air travelers

Air travelers were given elderberry capsules starting 10 days before long-distance travel and monitored.  Some air travelers received inactive placebo pills.  Among 312 participants, 158 received elderberry capsules and 154 placebo pills.  The elderberry group experienced fewer colds (12 versus 17) and fewer symptomatic days (247 versus 583) than those individuals taking placebo.  Among subjects who developed a cold following their travel experience, those taking elderberry capsules experienced shorter duration of cold symptoms (4.75 days versus 6.88 days) and less severe symptoms.  [Nutrients April 2016]
