Don’t overlook omega-6 fatty acids

The predominant shortage of omega-3 fatty acids in western diets has been underscored in recent studies with the recommendation that modern populations either consume more fatty fish or fortify their diet with fish oil capsules.  However, the essentiality of omega-6 fatty acids (primary source corn oil) has been overlooked.  Both omega-3 and omega-6 oils are essential for life.

A recent study emphasizes the importance of omega-6 fatty acids in the diet.  The risk of death decreased significantly (cut in half) when HIV-infected patients had adequate omega-6 fatty acid blood levels.  Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) omega-6 oils from borage, evening primrose or black currant seeds are natural sources.
