Calcium supplementation increases risk for mental decline in women

This writer has been waving a red flag over the down-side risk of calcium supplements for some time now. []  Basically, women approaching menopause cease production of estrogen from their ovaries and lose the signal to hold calcium in bone.  As calcium is lost from bone it is deposited in arteries, stiffening them and increasing the risk for heart attacks.  Women should acquire calcium from their diet, not supplements, and obtain a replacement for their lost estrogen.

Now another hazard of calcium supplementation has been revealed.  Women taking calcium supplements are at greater risk for mental decline in the latter years of their lives.  The risk was double for calcium supplement users versus non-users and was seven times greater for women who have had a stroke.
